Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE)

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE)

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), also known as plasmapheresis, is a procedure that separates plasma from the blood and replaces it with donor plasma or a replacement fluid.

The process removes a portion of circulating plasma proteins along with the substances carried in it.

At Austin Regenerative Therapy, TPE is offered under physician supervision as part of a longevity and health optimization program. Whether TPE is appropriate for you is determined by Dr. Nguyen during consultation.

Scientific Evidence and Benefits

Therapeutic plasma exchange is an established procedure with a substantial clinical literature. Dr. Nguyen will discuss the current evidence, including its limits, during your consultation.

Cutting-edge Advancements

Dr. Khanh Nguyen was a co-investigator on clinical research with The Golden Gift, a nonprofit conducting studies on young fresh frozen plasma (yFFP).

Clinical trial participation was separate from the services offered at Austin Regenerative Therapy.

Plasma Safety Facts

Plasma is carefully regulated by the FDA under guidelines outlined in 21 CFR 640. It has been used safely since the 1920s, with proven efficacy over the decades.

In July 2000, the FDA confirmed that due to significant advancements in testing, the U.S. blood supply is the safest in the world. This has been consistently documented each year for the past 22 years, maintaining an impressive record of safety and success.

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange: What to Expect

  1. Preparation:Before your appointment, drink non-carbonated fluids, avoid acidic fruits such as strawberries and blueberries, and eat a light meal one hour prior. Wear comfortable clothing and arrange for someone to drive you home.
  2. Blood Collection and Plasma Exchange:A needle is placed in your arm and blood is drawn in small amounts. The machine separates and replaces the plasma, returning the treated blood to your body. The process may take a few hours.
  3. After the Procedure:Plan to rest and stay hydrated. Some people feel tired afterward. Dr. Nguyen will review what to expect during your consultation.
  4. Possible Side Effects: As with any apheresis procedure, side effects are possible and may include low calcium or magnesium, lowered body temperature, or changes in blood pressure. Dr. Nguyen will review the full risk profile with you, including how each is monitored and managed, during your consultation and informed consent process.
